Russell Moore’s ‘The Storm-Tossed Family,’ Wins ‘Christianity Today’ Book of the Year Award

December 11, 2018

NASHVILLE, Tenn. — Russell Moore’s “The Storm-Tossed Family: How the Cross Reshapes the Home,” a recent B&H Publishing Group release, has been honored with Christianity Today’s 2019 Book of the Year award.

This is the second B&H release authored by Moore to receive this particular distinction. “Onward: Engaging the Culture Without Losing the Gospel,” was named Christianity Today’s book of the year in 2016.

B&H—the trade book and Bible publishing arm of Lifeway Christian Resources—released “The Storm-Tossed Family” in September 2018. According to Christianity Today, the 2019 Book of the Year award is given to “the release that best embodies our pursuit of Beautiful Orthodoxy.”

In “The Storm-Tossed Family,” Moore, president of the Southern Baptist Convention’s Ethics and Religious Liberty Commission (ERLC), addresses why families have power over people as individuals, explores how family makes people who they are, and how understanding the right emphasis on both the home and the church can bring freedom to the individual and reflects the glory of God.

“He explains persuasively how the church is our first family while giving practical, realistic direction in how to nurture and maintain a healthy, biblical family life, one that reflects the life, death and resurrection of our Lord,” wrote Mark Galli, Christianity Today editor-n-chief.

“In other words, he tells the truth about what it means to be a biblical family (orthodoxy) and does so in a way that makes the family good news (beautiful).”

Other topics covered in “The Storm-Tossed Family” include: marriage, sexuality and fidelity; divorce, abuse and broken relationships; parenting, discipline and bonding; and trauma, generational sin and healing.

Moore’s current post at the ERLC—combined with previous ministry and academic roles at Southern Baptist Theological Seminary—uniquely position him to bring theological insight and pastoral approach to these sensitive topics.

“Dr. Moore’s work—really, everything he writes—is a rare combination of equal parts truth and beauty,” said B&H Trade Books publisher Devin Maddox. “It’s fun to see Dr. Moore receive honor he so richly deserves.”
